WAYS TO OBTAIN
CYPRIOT
CITIZENSHIP

First of all, we should mention the fact that there are 4 ways in which one can acquire Cypriot Nationality:

  •  Naturalization based on years of residence in Cyprus
  •  As a spouse of a Cypriot citizen
  •  Due to Cypriot origin
  •  Through the Cyprus Investment Programme

Short Introduction:

Application for Cypriot citizenship through naturalization

An application for the acquisition of Cypriot citizenship by naturalization may be submitted by a foreign adult with full capacity who has completed 5 or 7 years of legal residence in the Republic depending on his/her residence status and is subject to the Civil Registry Law.  In particular, naturalization is regulated by Article 111 and the Third Schedule of the Law.

The application which is submitted is called M127 and must be accompanied by the necessary accompanying documents which must be duly certified and translated.  Please note that the application must be signed before a Notary Public or Consular Officer or other person authorized for this purpose.

Due to marriage/civil partnership with a Cypriot citizen

Acquisition of Cypriot citizenship by marriage or civil partnership (M125), applies to foreign spouses of Cypriot nationals or civil partners of Cypriot nationals as defined by the Civil Partnership Law, who may apply under the Civil Registry Law.

Right to apply

An application for the acquisition of Cypriot citizenship by marriage or civil partnership with a Cypriot citizen may be submitted by persons who:

  • Have completed three years of marriage prior to the submission of the application and are resident in the Republic, (at least the last two years prior to the submission of the application must have been residing in the Republic).
  • They have completed three years of marriage before submitting the application and are permanent residents abroad.

Acquisition of nationality by descent

There are three types of acquisition of Cypriot nationality by descent

  • Application for a Consular Birth Certificate ( M121)

This concerns minors or adults born abroad after 16 August 1960 whose father at the time of birth was a Cypriot citizen and persons born after 11 June 1999 whose mother was a Cypriot citizen at the time of birth.

  • Application for Registration of Minors (M126)

Minors born before 11 June 1999, either in Cyprus or abroad, whose mother is a Cypriot citizen and father is a foreigner, or minors whose father acquired Cypriot citizenship after their birth.  Furthermore, the application is also submitted for minors whose father or mother acquired Cypriot citizenship by naturalization or registration by marriage to a Cypriot citizen.

  • Adult applications of type M123

Persons born after 16 August 1960 whose, at the date of birth, neither of their parents had Cypriot citizenship.

At this point we should mention that all types of applications for citizenship mentioned above are submitted to the Department of Civil Registry and Immigration, or to the local Provincial Administrations.  All applications are handled by the Nationality Branch of the Department of Population and Immigration Records
